Austin Healey

Terry Davis brought us this veteran SCCA racecar which he wanted to drive in Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing (RMVR) competition.

This car was made up of a lot of nice parts, but they didn’t quite add up to a nice car. Did it have a nice oil cooler? Yes. But it was held in place with baling wire. No, no, no. The hood was barely hanging on. Overall, it lacked structural integrity. Still, the stickers we found on the car showed it had been racing since at least 1980. Why not build it up for a few decades more?

Before its first RMVR season, we concentrated on structure, safety and paint. We replaced the fuel cell. We built an entirely new cage to comply with RMVR specifications. An earlier modification gave the car tremendous wheel flares which we sheared off. RMVR rules require the body to be of stock size and shape.

We built a new fire extinguishing system as specified by RMVR regulations.

The Sprite’s breathes through its bug-eye. The left headlight hole is used for air intake.

Before the 2009 race season, we rebuilt the transmission and improved the engine.
